Desire and Agency in the Modern Women\u27s Sonnet

This dissertation investigates the ways that women poets, from the late Renaissance to the postmodern age, have used the sonnet form both to critique and to re-envision the female experience, particularly in regard to the cultural value of love. In addition to its analysis of poetic form, this dissertation also engages a cultural/feminist critique based on an enduring theme in women\u27s writing: the power of patriarchal constructs to prevent women\u27s individuation within traditional, middle-class cultural norms

Catalogues : Catalogues canadiens en art contemporain = Catalogues : Canadian Catalogues on Contemporary Art

"Through contacts with Canadian galleries we found that a great number of catalogues on contemporary art have been produced during the last ten years, however, generally speaking, these catalogues have received little attention outside their region of origin. We thought that a publication bringing together these catalogues would increase the awareness of their existence and thereby increase their distribution throughout Canada and abroad." -- p. 5

Higher education, mature students and employment goals: policies and practices in the UK

    Get PDF
This article considers recent policies of Higher Education in the UK, which are aimed at widening participation and meeting the needs of employers. The focus is on the growing population of part-time students, and the implications of policies for this group. The article takes a critical perspective on government policies, using data from a major study of mature part-time students, conducted in two specialist institutions in the UK, a London University college and a distance learning university. Findings from this study throw doubt on the feasibility of determining a priori what kind of study pathway is most conducive for the individual in terms of employment gains and opportunities for upward social mobility. In conclusion, doubts are raised as to whether policies such as those of the present UK government are likely to achieve its aims. Such policies are not unique to the UK, and lessons from this country are relevant to most of the developed world

An oligofluorene truxene based distributed feedback laser for biosensing applications

    Get PDF
The first example of an all-organic oligofluorene truxene based distributed feedback laser for the detection of a specific protein–small molecule interaction is reported. The protein avidin was detected down to View the MathML source1ÎŒgmL−1 using our biotin-labelled biosensor platform. This interaction was both selective and reversible when biotin was replaced with desthiobiotin. Avidin detection was not perturbed by Bovine Serum Albumin up to View the MathML source50,000ÎŒgmL−1. Our biosensor offers a new detection platform that is both highly sensitive, modular and potentially re-usable
